FROM A MOTHER'S PERSPECTIVE
Having grown up listening to stories from both his father and brother about fraternity life, it was never a question in my mind that Stubby would choose to join a fraternity when he went away to college. Knowing that the friends you make as part of fraternity life will play an intergral roll in one's entire college career and after, the question that loomed heavy in my mind was which fraternity would he choose.
While I was surprised that Stubby chose to pledge Theta Chi and not the fraternity that every male member of his family in the past had been a part of, I can say without question that his choice, along with his decision to attend Randolph Macon College, have been two of the best decisions he has made in his young adult life.
I was warned on my first trip to the Theta Chi house that I might not want to go inside. This warning came from my husband, who had lived in a fraternity house. Despite the warning, I ventured in only to quickly realize that maybe for once I should have taken the advice I had been given. Proudly I can say, as a result of the hard work of parents and "brothers", the "house" has undergone a remarkable transformation and is now something that I look forward to visiting.
As with everything one chooses to do in life, we have always tried to instill in our son that belief that "you get what you give". Be it the smile on a lonely elderly person's face when you pay them a visit, the joy you see in a child's eyes when you give them a gift that they could only dream of, or the friends that you make that will last a lifetime, being an active member of a fraternity can bring great rewards. While I jokingly say at times that I fear for my "social security" when I am with some of the boys, I can say without hesitation that I truly believe my future, as well as that of my son's, will be greatly enhanced by what he has learned by being an active member of Theta Chi, and the young men he has met, and now calls "Brother".
